(REAL NAME)    Rezension bezieht sich auf: Worse than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush (Gebundene Ausgabe) John W Dean, a lawyer turned investment banker, presents a case - not to a court deciding about impeachment but to and for the American people. Under scrutiny: the G W Bush administration I (and not, perhaps surprisingly, just another president).
Apart from a more psychologically inspired entrée in which the author compares Bush's first tenure with Nixon's reign on a déja-vu notion, the story unfolds like a classical drama. So, the second chapter introduces Mr Bush's and Mr Cheney's habit of methodically 'stonewalling' their respective professional past. Being in office, this habit becomes a strategy of suppressing critical media and projecting images as Dean shows in his third chapter. The reader may ask: to what end? - Well, the author's answer is a collection of known neo-cons programmatic views and deeds connected with the introduction of some more administration members like e.g. Mr Ashcroft. This chapter clearly marks the culmination point of the book, suggesting that there is 'secret government' beside the official. The penultimate chapter then focuses on foreign relations (Iraq) and environmental issues (EPA and energy), thereby exemplifying the 'hidden agenda'. In the sixth chapter Dean eventually summarises his findings in no less than eleven potential scandals or, as you may say, accusations. He also gives his view on the combination of secrecy and government which he considers in effect as undermining the very grounds of American democracy.
One could easily dismiss the book as one more in the row of the Bush-bashing collection. Was not there the throughout the book sober style of the author, presenting facts and ruling techniques ... Was not there the author's personal standing being born in 1939 already, having served as a counsel to president Nixon, and having retired from a successful career in investment banking ...
